Tiny Giraffe with iPad

My fancy new iPad!

I was browsing around the internet this evening (on my fancy new iPad!) when I stumbled across these little bundles of joy. After watching all the videos (the live cub cam was down, unfortunately), I noticed that you could adopt a Firefox!

Tiny Giraffe and Red Panda

A very small red panda of my very own? I’d be the envy of my social circle. But adoption? This made me wonder: could someone adopt a giraffe? I myself am not quite ready to don the crown of motherhood, but this time of year especially, I feel my heartstrings tugged at by the thought of those less fortunate giraffes- those giraffes out in the wild with no iPads or mittens to keep their hooves warm. I wonder how all the animals up at the Bronx zoo are faring? It’s been freezing here in the city lately.

It turns out that the World Animal Foundation does allow giraffe adoption! In fact, it’s encouraged! Actually, for a one time donation of $35, you can pretty much adopt any kind of animal there- Penguins, Bison, Hippos, Manatee, you name it. The giraffe page mentioned something bothersome, however:

Vulnerable Tiny Giraffe

I wouldn’t consider myself to be a “vulnerable” giraffe. Emotionally sensitive and tiny, perhaps, but still savvy. I suppose not all giraffes are as lucky as I am. On second thought, if giraffes are so vulnerable, why can’t I gift them more than $35? You can’t get anything useful with $35. The case protecting my fancy new iPad was $39. For $35, I might as well go to Purl in Soho and buy enough yarn to knit every giraffe in the tristate area a double pair of mittens!

Hmm…. I’ll muse on this some more later. I’ve gotten completely sidetracked from the task at hand- coming up with the perfect panda names for their contest: Lily… Lulu… Fabienne…Constance…Harriet…Dottie….
